Data privacy notice

Last updated: August 2026. This notice explains our website and organisational contact practices. It is provided for transparency and is not a substitute for legal advice.

1. Who we are (data controller)

Health Justice Africa Initiative is a Ghanaian, African-led nonprofit registered in Ghana, working at the intersection of health, law and social justice. For personal data processed through this website, we are the data controller.

2. Legal and regional alignment

As a Ghanaian organisation, our primary reference is Ghana’s Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843) and the oversight of the Data Protection Commission. We aim to process personal data lawfully, fairly and for clear purposes.

Because we work across Africa and engage partners continent-wide, we also respect widely shared African data-protection principles, including those reflected in the African Union’s Convention on Cyber Security and Personal Data Protection (Malabo Convention) and national data-protection laws of African states where we may interact with individuals: consent or other lawful basis, purpose limitation, data minimisation, security, accountability, and respect for the rights of data subjects.

Where another country’s law applies to a specific interaction, we will take that into account in good faith when responding to requests.

3. Information we collect

Through this website we may collect:

• Contact and engagement forms: name, email address, phone number, topic or interest type, and message content.
• Technical data: standard server and security logs (for example IP address, browser type, date/time of access) that our hosting provider may record to operate and protect the site. We do not use advertising trackers on this site at present.
• WhatsApp: if you message us via the WhatsApp link, Meta/WhatsApp processes that chat under their own terms and privacy policy. We only see what you send to our organisational number.

We do not ask for payment card details on this website. When online giving is introduced, we will update this notice and use appropriate secure payment providers.

4. Why we use your information

We use personal information only to:

• Respond to enquiries and messages
• Follow up on donation, partnership, volunteering or media interest
• Keep a modest record of correspondence needed for organisational accountability
• Protect the security and integrity of our website and communications

We do not sell personal information. We do not use your contact details for unrelated marketing lists.

5. Lawful basis

Depending on the context, we rely on:

• Consent — when you choose to submit a form or contact us
• Legitimate interests — responding to you, securing our systems, and running a nonprofit in the public interest, balanced against your rights
• Legal obligation — where Ghanaian or other applicable law requires us to retain or disclose information

6. Who we share information with

We share information only as needed to operate:

• Form delivery: contact and engagement forms are sent via FormSubmit to our organisational email (info@healthjusticeafrica.org).
• Hosting and email: our website host and email provider process data as service providers under their terms.
• Maps: embedded maps load content from Google Maps; their privacy terms apply to that service.
• Authorities: we may disclose information if required by Ghanaian law or a competent authority.

We do not share your details with third parties for their own marketing.

7. International transfers

Some service providers (for example form delivery, hosting or email infrastructure) may process data on servers outside Ghana. Where that happens, we choose reputable providers and limit what we send to what is needed for the service. If you have concerns about a transfer, contact us using the details above.

8. Retention

We keep correspondence only as long as reasonably needed to respond, follow up, meet legal or accountability duties, or resolve disputes — then we delete or anonymise it where practicable. Exact periods may vary with the type of enquiry (for example a one-off message versus an ongoing partnership discussion).

9. Security

We take reasonable technical and organisational steps to protect information submitted through this site, including HTTPS where available, security-minded hosting configuration, and limiting access to organisational email accounts. No method of transmission over the internet is perfectly secure; please use official channels listed on our Contact page and verify you are on healthjusticeafrica.org.

10. Your rights

Under Ghana’s Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843) and in line with common African data-protection practice, you may request to:

• Access personal data we hold about you
• Correct inaccurate information
• Request deletion where appropriate
• Object to or restrict certain processing
• Withdraw consent where processing is based on consent

To exercise these rights, email info@healthjusticeafrica.org with enough detail for us to identify your request. You may also contact the Data Protection Commission of Ghana if you believe your rights have not been respected.

11. Children

This website is aimed at adults and organisational contacts. We do not knowingly seek personal data from children through our forms. If you believe a child has sent us information, please contact us so we can delete it.

12. Cookies and similar technologies

We do not currently run third-party advertising or analytics cookies on this site. The site may use essential technical storage required for basic function and security. If we introduce analytics later, we will update this notice and, where required, seek appropriate consent.

13. Updates

We may update this notice as our website, programmes or legal duties grow. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the site after an update means you should review the revised notice.
