Organisation history
Established to connect legal protection with health-system reform
Health Justice Africa Initiative is a Ghanaian, African-led nonprofit organisation working at the intersection of health, law and social justice. It was incorporated in Ghana on 27 March 2026 as a private company limited by guarantee under the Companies Act, 2019 (Act 992). Its official registration number is CG020030326.
The organisation was established to promote health-rights awareness, particularly among vulnerable and affected populations, provide legal empowerment and support, and strengthen community engagement in health systems.
We address the legal, social, economic and institutional barriers that prevent people from accessing acceptable, affordable and quality healthcare. We work with communities, health institutions, public authorities, professionals and civil-society partners to advance equitable and accountable health systems.
Founding story
Health is a fundamental human right, not a privilege.
Across Ghana and other parts of Africa, people may be denied appropriate care, treated without dignity, exposed to discrimination or excluded from decisions affecting their health. Many do not know their rights, where to report violations or how to hold institutions accountable.
The Initiative was founded by Rachel Otu-Amponsah, a Ghanaian lawyer and health-justice practitioner whose work in health law, human rights, public-health policy and community engagement revealed the need for an organisation that connects legal protection with practical health-system reform.
Health Justice Africa Initiative was therefore established to help communities understand and exercise their rights, document systemic barriers to healthcare and work with institutions to create fairer, more responsive and accountable health systems.
